Errands and the Beach!

Today we slept in a little and got laundry done.  Then it was off to Summercise for Lila.  They provide lunch and a snack for the kids and they play games and learn about staying healthy.  Lila loves it!

So for 4 hours Will and I ran errands and went to Mom's group on the beach.  As we were running our errands I took some pictures around Nome.

This is where I parked on Front Street.  It is in the Subway/Movie Theater parking lot.

Our Subway (the only fast food restaurant in town) has an ocean view!  It is really beautiful.  I find it easier to park here and walk around town then to try to parallel park our big truck.  I just throw the stroller in the back and it works out great.

It looks like this ATV is all ready for Christmas.



Ididarod Arch

We passed by the Ididerod arch on our walk.  They move it onto Front Street during the race.  I'll have pictures of that in March!

Now I know how many miles we are away from all of you!

After our jaunt around town.  We went to the beach for Mom's Group.  We had so much fun.  I hadn't been out there before.  Here is a picture of a barge we passed along the way.

This was the view when we got to the beach.  As I was driving the truck out there it was a little rough.  I was thinking we might not make it, but we did and it was worth it!

After enjoying a great time on the beach.  We had popcorn, italian sodas, coffee, and chocolate muffins, we went back to pick up Lila from Summercise!!  It was a beautiful day in Nome!













Around Our Apartment / Shopping Trip!

I wanted to start this post with some pictures of fun things around our apartment. 

Musk Oxen

This is a picture of a herd of Musk Oxen in our parking lot.  I took it with my phone, I hope to get a better picture when they come back again.  The police came to chase them away.

Dog Sled

I took this picture today.  This dog sled has been parked in our parking lot since we moved here.  I think it is used to pull behind the snowmobile in the winter.  There are pleanty of dog teams around Nome.  I will try to get a picture to post.

The weather here has been very rainy lately.  It hasn't been over 50 degrees in a couple of weeks.  But it really doesn't feel cold.  I've been wearing a sweater and vest (or rain jacket) and have felt pretty comfortable.  Maybe we are just used to it now. 

Today Will and I went grocery shopping.  First we went to the Nome Seafood Company.  I wanted to pick up some Sweet Chili sauce.  They have the best price.



I asked the girl who works there to pick up a King Crab so I could share a picture. 

Will loves the King Crab and will try to chase them all over the floor in the kitchen.  We cooked Crab with our neighbors for Matt and Will's birthday and our neighbor's birthday.  It was a lot of fun.  And they are pretty tasty!  Although I prefer crab with cream cheese in a wonton. 

Then Will and I walked over to the water to see the boats.

The Nome Seafood Company processes the crab and fish that is fished in the Bearing Sea.  I think.  They do process fish there and you can watch them from inside the store.

Then we drove over to the grocery store.  It is called Hanson's Trading Company, but on the inside it is a Safeway. 



Today I had too many groceries to carry out by hand (and carry Will at the same time) so we took the cart down that ramp.  It was quite bumpy.  Will liked it on the way down, but the way up he was angry with me.  I guess he'd had enough bumping in the cart.  I'm not sure how well this will work in the winter.

Usually the milk expires the next week.  So I have been buying milk in 1/2 gallon cartons.  It costs a little more, but it lasts longer.

Today was the first day I bought eggs.  We buy most of our dry goods from Amazon.com.  We buy in bulk but it saves a lot of money.  Groceries are expensive out here!

I hope it is warm and sunny where you are!  This weather is cold and rainy, but the scenery is beautiful!  I love seeing the clouds cover the mountains.

We are here!



Well, I guess it has been a while.  We have been in Nome now for about three weeks!  Where has the time gone!  It has been a whirlwind of unpacking, organizing, working, registering for kindergarten, meeting friends, and exploring!

Things are very different here but from the second our plane landed it has felt like home!

I haven't actually taken many pictures.  I think my camera has been lost in my unpacking/organizing, but I do have some to share.

The first weekend we were here, some of our neighbors took us for a drive along the Nome-Teller highway.  It takes about 70 miles to drive to Teller (which is a village).  It is only accessable by car during the summer.  We drove about halfway there but turned around early.  Here are some pictures I took along the way:

A Yurt.  Some people live in these when the go to camp in the summer.  This one is close enough that people may live in in all year long.



 A broken down car along the Nome-Teller Highway.  There are lots of things that just get left out here.  We also saw a snow mobile that had been left.  It must have been a long walk back to town in the winter!

This is my favourite picture from the trip.  The scenery is breath taking!

After we got back to Nome that day, we decided to drive up Anvil Mountain which is right behind our apartment building. 



This picture is taken pretty close to where our apartment building is.

On top of Anvil Mountain is White Alice.  White Alice is a communication system built and used during the Cold War.

They are massive.  It is hard to imagine that they were brought here and assembled so long ago.  Unfortunately it looks as if they are being taking down.  There were fences all around them, but at one point you could walk right up to them.



 And last but not least is a picture of our truck on top of Anvil Mountain!  I'm looking forward to having 4x4 in the winter!
